Basho
2017-2018
Digital, colour pencil and marker
Basho's embryonic stage was a patchwork of illustrations in colour pencil and marker, of all kinds of objects and elements found in and representative of Japan and its culture. After months of research production, cartographic shapes started taking over, and these became visual symbols of their own. The geographical composition of Japan as a country is particular as it is insular, and thus composed of a multitude of morcels rather than one chunk.
By extracting each and every island from its generally accepted context (a shape part of a territory on a map) the artist redefined their definitions as well. The islands became not a part of one territory but individual elements, independent of each other and that could be perceived as something else than a land to which a specific population of people could lay claim and decide to control.
Basho is the representation of the notion of territory from another point of view, through the abstraction and visual appropriation of meaning-infused shapes.
